Parasuicide

WHAT IS PARASUICIDE?[1]

Parasuicide, sometimes called Deliberate Self-Harm, is when someone mimics the act of suicide, but does not end up killing themselves.

Parasuicide is not the same as the people who injure themselves, but who not to a degree that is life-threatening. These people who can also be classed under the heading of deliberate self-harm, usually express other reasons for their actions. For example, some people deliberately cut themselves as they feel this brings them some relief from strong feelings of anxiety or tension that they are feeling at the time

WHO ARE AT MOST RISK OF PARASUICIDE?[1]
Parasuicide is more common among women. Particularly younger women under the age of 45, and more specifically between the ages of 15 and 25. The highest rates are found in divorced, single, or teenage wives, and is often linked to being poor.

Most cases of parasuicide are associated with mental health problems, particularly common ones are:
Other factors that make an act of parasuicide more likely include:
  • Relationship Problems
  • Being Unemployed
  • Being Physically ill, particularly epileptic
  • Being Mentally Handicapped
  • Being Neglected or Abused by your Parents
  • Having a Parent die at a young age
  • Coping with a loved one's illness
  • Being in trouble with the Law
EPIDEMIOLOGICAL[2]

Nearly half of all suicides are preceded by an attempt at suicide that does not end in death. Those with a history of such attempts are 23 times more likely to eventually end their own lives than those without.[6]
Those who attempt to harm themselves are, as a group, quite different from those who actually die from suicide; females attempt suicide much more frequently than males do, but males are four times more likely to die from suicide.[7] The incidence of parasuicide ranges from as low as 2.6 to as high as 1,100 per 100,000 people per year. The lifetime incidence of parasuicide has been estimated as low as 720 and as high as 5,930 per 100,000 people. Parasuicide is more likely to occur in younger people and females. Other risk factors include being single or being divorced, unemployment, recent change in living condition, mental illness, ill health and a past history of parasuicide. Substance abuse, especially alcohol, is highly associated with parasuicide.[2]
One study found that perfectionism could be a factor in parasuicide. A high level of perfectionism was found in patients that had been hospitalised for parasuicide and the study suggests that perfectionism is more likely to lead to feelings of failure, therefore making a suicide attempt or parasuicide more likely.[8]

WHAT ARE THE COMMON METHODS OF PARASUICIDE[1]

The most common method of suicide is taking an overdose of drugs. In the UK, 90% of cases involve drugs. These may be ones already prescribed by a doctor, or common medications such as painkillers. Paracetamol is a particularly common choice, but is very dangerous because if the person changes their mind, a small overdose can cause all sorts of physical problems which can leave the person with severe liver damage and in chronic pain.

Why Do People Commit Parasuicide?[1]

Parasuicide may be a genuine attempt by the person to kill themselves, or it has been suggested that it can be 'a cry for help', the person feeling this is the only way that their level of distress is recognised.
In fact, there may be a number of reasons why a person commits a parasuicide, and there are a number of theories around that attempt to explain it. Unfortunately we haven't got the space to go into these here.

What Treatment Will They Receive?[1]

Treatment will depend on the specific circumstances of the patient. It is really important to understand the specific reason someone has committed a parasuicide and if the person has really meant to die, or has done it for another reason however irrational this might be.
Dependent on the outcome of a full assessment the treatment should reflect the causes of the parasuicide.
For example, if a person was suffering from depression, they may well receive antidepressant medication and receive psychotherapy.
Remember having committed an act of parasuicide makes it much more likely that the person will do it again, or even commit suicide. Any signs that all is not well with the person should be picked up early and the appropriate treatment given.

What About The Family & Friends?[1]

Parasuicide is extremely traumatic for those people close to the person involved. These people should consider seeking some help if they feel that they need it. Sometimes these people can be forgotten.
Also those people who may have been around at the time of an attempt (e.g. police, paramedics e.t.c.) can be severely affected by what they see. This can sometimes lead to conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Jalan Istiqamah

Motivasi
Untuk sahabat-sahabat yang kurang berjaya,
Jangan pernah mudah berputus asa,
(*syeikh zaman ni mane ade exam??Macam mana nak ambil ibrah)
***Krik-krik***

Jiwa dironta, emosi dikurung, kemurungan pula dibakar,
Lantas menghangatkan lagi api ke”tensionan”
Habis hilang segala ke”hensem”an dan ke’cantik’an makhluk bernama manusia.
-Ok just joke-

Ikhwah dan akhawat,
Jangan mudah bersangka buruk.Sebenarnya Allah amat-amat menyayangi kita.

Kisah umat Islam pula..

"Please Ainaa, you promise me that you wanted to be together. Don't do this to me..." "I have my life. I have my father Sam.dia yang tentukan hidup I. Please Sam,kalau awak sayangkan saya tolong lepaskan diri ini. I'm going to egypt tomorrow. Its too late dear."

"Then,I'm going with you." Jawab Sam selamba tanpa memikirkan apa yang berlaku. "Kau gila sam?!"

"Hamboi ina, cantiknya you ni. And I couldn't agree more, your english never fail! By the way, sorry I tak sengaja nak terkejutkan you. Kejap eh."

Sayang, inilah my best friend from high school, ainaa sofea." Mereka berbalas senyuman. Ainaa pantas mencuit bahu kawannya. "Kau buat apa dekat sini? And since when you got married and I don't even know?"Suaranya berbaur marah. soalannya itu tidak dibalas laju kerana bunyi telefon dari dalam beg galasnya membingitkan suasana. Its my mother-in-law." Pasrah, dia mengangguk terpaksa.

(bersambung)

Your Present is Your Future.

It was freaking awful for me to be late to class on that day. I didn't learn my lessons and never get sick of being punished in front of other students.  I never understand what time meant all about. It was not the first time I got late to class. Since ever I guess I never know how to appreciate time. "Time is precious. It resembles your character and personality! Be quick nisa'! " It was my mum's word every day, every night and every hours!

When I arrived to the open door, sengsei(my japanese teacher), pointed out her finger and do a circle for several times and slammed the door shut. Understood of what she meant, I rushed to the students assembly hall and make ten rounds running to and fro with my school uniform on. The uniform started to crumple and smudge with dust and dirt since I needed to go through the rain to reach my class again. "Great, its raining!"

Arriving to the class, I knocked the door and greeted her with some greetings in japanese and apologized. She asked me to take my seat and started to open page 27 but then again great things happen, I didn't finish my work. It was not that I forgot to do my work, it just that I finished the page until page 26 only and went to bed at the usual hours. I started to get panicked but tried to remain cool and acted normal. Her voice that was so sharp and loud made the inner soul drowned for help! When I opened the book, it was so clean until that I thought to take a glimpse to my friend's book besides me but suddenly I felt someone standing still like a bark tree giving some solemnly mood nervously.

"Watashi..wata..watashiwa nisa'des. anatano uchi ek..(I'm..I'm nisa.my friend...)"

Bannnng! something hit me on my head. It was that thick book again!!! That japanese third edition, an author by Shinageng in Tokyo. The book that she had been used to hit her students for reasons more and more. She talked something in japan but not a word that I understood. I wanted to laugh when one of my friend make a joke about it as soon as she turned her back to face the blackboard. But trust me, she was born with four eyes and eleven ears! She knew it and that crazy friend was scolded and punished to stand on his chair until the class is over.

I started to drip down sweats when she said that who ever make trouble in her class she/he would be send off to meet the principle.

"Life is already hard. Why are you people nowadays always tend to make fuse with it? You didn't learn hard. Making everything so hard to be achieved. When I was in japan, studying hard to be a teacher to you, It was one way off to go to hell. I was not able to sleep, to talk, to eat and I even hadn't got any shower for days because of what my late teachers did to me. We were forced to study until I got sick. But that never failed us to keep on doing what we should do. They were so strict with times. They appreciated time. When I walked, I tried to remember, when I went to bed, I still memorized all the notes. You always get feed up by teachers nowadays. You don't work hard on it! Play around and come late to class and not be serious of what your future is..." She paused and the class broke with silence and tears.

"If its tiring, don't look towards the future now. just concentrate on what your present. Fulfill all the requirements of your present. Have you achieve all today? Wake up my all!"

I sensed something hot flushing my cheeks. I didn't realized that I had cried over the touch heart moment with sengsei. She had been awful tired trying to teach us. But one thing that I hadn't realized until that moment. It was the appreciation. The appreciation towards my time, my present, my books, my homework, my teachers, my friends, my ultimate sleep and my family. Instead, what I did was to appreciate wasting. I wasted all of the things I had. I played wasting. Sighing goods and concentrated to fool around.

That was me few years ago, in my high school years. I really hope that who ever read this will never see things as hard as they always think. "Life is hard, why would you always making it more harder with sighing? Move on and grab the chance. Play hard! Be good! Be better than yesterday. be strong!and always be happy with your present because the good is waiting for you one day.."
Stay strong everyone!
